Understanding Gold Leaf Karats and Color Variations
Walk into a gilding supplier and you'll find leaf sold under names like “23k genuine,” “18k lemon,” and “12k white,” and it's easy to assume these are marketing labels. They're not — karat is a precise, unambiguous measurement, and the color names describe real, predictable differences that come directly from what's mixed into the gold.
Karat is just a fraction
Karat counts parts of gold out of 24 total parts by mass. That definition makes the math trivially exact: divide the karat by 24 and multiply by 100 to get the percentage of gold in an alloy. 24 karat is undiluted gold, 100% by definition. 18 karat is exactly 18/24, or 75% gold, with the remaining quarter made up of other metals. There's no ambiguity or rounding built into the definition itself — a 22k alloy is exactly 22/24 (about 91.7%) gold, full stop. Running the same formula down the scale gives a clean, checkable table: 23k is 95.8% gold, 20k is 83.3%, 18k is 75% exactly, 16k is 66.7%, 14k is 58.3%, and 12k is exactly half gold by mass.
What is genuinely open to variation is what fills the remaining fraction. Two different 18k alloys can both be honestly labeled 18 karat while looking and behaving quite differently, because the non-gold portion can be mostly silver, mostly copper, or a mix of both in different ratios. Karat tells you how much gold is present; it says nothing on its own about what else is in the mix, which is exactly why two leaves of the same karat can sit side by side and look visibly different.
Why pure gold isn't the default choice
If 24k is undiluted gold, why isn't it always the obvious pick? Pure gold is remarkably soft — that softness is exactly why it beats out into leaf so thin in the first place, but it also means a piece finished in unalloyed gold can show wear from handling or abrasion faster than an alloyed leaf would. Alloying in silver or copper firms up the metal at a small cost to its purity, which is why 23k and 22k genuine leaf see wide practical use: they sit close enough to pure gold to keep the rich color everyone associates with gilding, while gaining just enough hardness to hold up better in use. The right karat for a project usually comes down to balancing color against durability for wherever the piece will actually live.
Where the color actually comes from
Silver and copper don't just dilute gold — they shift its color in specific, predictable directions. Adding proportionally more silver cools and lightens the alloy: a small amount nudges 22k or 18k toward a paler, slightly lemon-tinted yellow, and a heavier dose of silver relative to gold pushes the color further, toward a genuinely greenish cast in alloys sometimes marketed as “green gold.” Copper does the opposite, warming the alloy toward a rosier, redder tone as its proportion increases. This is worth sitting with for a moment, because it's the detail beginners most often get backward: karat measures how much gold is present, and color is set separately by the ratio of silver to copper in whatever fraction isn't gold. A 22k leaf and an 18k leaf can both lean warm or both lean cool depending on that ratio — karat and color move on two different, independent axes, even though in practice suppliers tend to pair particular karats with particular traditional color names.
An alloy with silver content pushed to roughly half the mix — something in the 12–14 karat range — produces what's often sold as “white gold leaf” or “moon gold.” It's genuinely pale and cool compared to standard yellow leaf, but it still carries a faint warmth from the gold that remains in it; it isn't a true, neutral white. For a leaf that's actually white and won't drift warmer over time, gilders turn to palladium leaf, a platinum-group metal with no gold content at all, chosen specifically because it holds a cool, bright white indefinitely.
Where composition leaf sits relative to all of this
It's worth being precise about a distinction that packaging sometimes blurs: composition leaf (also called Dutch metal or schlag) isn't a low-karat gold alloy at all. It's a copper-zinc alloy — brass — with zero gold content, so it doesn't sit at the bottom of the karat scale the way 12k white gold does; it isn't on the karat scale in any sense, because karat only describes gold-content alloys. The same is true of silver leaf and palladium leaf: both are genuine precious metals, but neither is a gold alloy, so neither carries a karat rating either. Karat is specifically a gold-purity measurement, and it's easy to see why the naming gets muddled — composition leaf is deliberately styled and colored to resemble genuine gold leaf on a shelf, and an unlabeled or mislabeled sheet can look convincingly like the real thing until you know what to check. The color names you'll actually see on packaging
Manufacturers don't usually print a raw percentage on the package — they print a karat number and a color name, and the same handful of names recur across suppliers even though exact alloy ratios vary a little between them. Standard yellow (24k, 23k, 22k) needs no separate name because it's the default most people picture when they hear “gold leaf.” Lemon gold and green gold both come from pushing silver content up at a given karat, with green gold representing a heavier silver dose than lemon. White gold or moon gold pushes silver further still, toward roughly an even split with the remaining gold. Rose or pink gold sits at the opposite end of that same silver-versus-copper axis, made by leaning the alloy toward copper instead — less common in leaf than in cast jewelry, but it exists, and it's a useful example of just how far the same karat can be pushed toward a completely different visual result depending on which metal fills the alloy.
A karat number alone, in other words, tells you the gold content and nothing else; the color name is the part of the label doing the work of telling you what the alloy actually looks like. It's a useful habit to read the two pieces of information as answering separate questions every time — karat answering “how much gold,” color name answering “what does it look like” — rather than treating a label as a single combined description. Reading a label carefully — karat, color name, and whether it says “genuine” or something like “composition,” “imitation,” or “Dutch metal” — is the fastest way to know exactly what you're buying before it ever gets near a job.
Does a lower karat mean the leaf will tarnish?
Not in any practical sense, within the range gold leaf is actually sold in. Even 12k leaf is still half gold by mass, and that's generally enough gold content to keep the alloy behaving like a noble metal rather than like the base metals mixed into it — genuine gold leaf, across the karats gilders commonly use, is sold and used specifically because it resists the kind of oxidation and tarnish that copper- and silver-rich alloys are prone to. That's also part of why gold leaf makers rarely go much lower than about 12 karat: push the alloy further toward silver and copper and you start losing the tarnish resistance that's the entire point of choosing a gold alloy over a cheaper imitation in the first place. Composition leaf's brass alloy, with no gold in it at all, is the clear example of what happens on the other side of that line — it tarnishes visibly and needs a protective seal, precisely because none of the gold that would otherwise resist that reaction is present.
Practical guidance for choosing a karat
For most interior work where a rich, traditional gold color is the goal, 22k or 23k genuine leaf is the workhorse choice — close enough to pure gold in color and softness to behave like classic gilding, with just enough alloy for practical durability. Exterior and weather-exposed work often specifically calls for higher-karat leaf, since it resists tarnishing and environmental wear better over years outdoors, which is part of why 23k and 24k genuine leaf remain the standard for gilded domes, statuary, and outdoor lettering meant to last decades.
Lower-karat colored leaf — lemon, green, or white gold — is chosen deliberately for tone, often to complement or contrast with a piece finished mostly in standard yellow leaf, or to match an existing historic restoration where the original gilder used a particular alloy. Because alloy ratios vary somewhat between manufacturers even at the same nominal karat, matching an existing piece exactly is worth testing on a sample before committing to a full restoration — lay a small patch in an inconspicuous spot, let it settle, and compare it against the existing gilding in the same light you'll view the finished piece in.
