The physics behind it

Mass equals density times volume, and volume equals area times thickness for a thin, flat sheet. Rearranging for area gives area = mass ÷ (density × thickness) — plug in a weight of gold, its density (19.3 g per cubic centimetre for pure gold), and the leaf's thickness, and the calculator returns the area that weight of gold can cover once beaten out that thin.

It's a genuinely useful sanity check: it explains why gold leaf, despite being priced by weight like bullion, goes remarkably far once it's beaten into sheets — a single troy ounce of gold at standard leaf thickness covers several square metres.

How is gold leaf actually made this thin?

Gold is repeatedly hammered (traditionally by hand, now often by machine) between sheets of tough interleaving material, thinning and enlarging it in stages until it reaches its final thickness — a process called goldbeating. Gold's extreme malleability is what allows it to be beaten this thin without tearing.

How thin is "standard" gold leaf, really?

Genuine gold leaf is commonly beaten to somewhere around 0.1 micrometre (100 nanometres) — thin enough that light visibly passes through a sheet held up to a bright source. "Double" or "extra thick" leaf is beaten less, typically landing around 0.2–0.3 micrometres, trading some of that thinness for easier handling and better coverage per unit of gold used.

Why does area double when thickness is halved?

Because the volume of gold you're spreading out stays the same — mass divided by density gives a fixed volume, and that fixed volume equals area times thickness. Cut the thickness in half and the same volume has to cover exactly twice the area, and vice versa.

Does this account for alloy leaf like 18k or 22k?

The default density (19.3 g/cm³) is for pure gold; alloyed leaf (which includes some silver or copper) is very slightly less dense, so its true coverage will differ by a small amount. For most planning purposes the difference is minor — enter a custom density here if you have your specific alloy's figure.
