Burnishing and Finishing: The Last Steps After Laying Leaf
It's tempting to think of gilding as finished the moment leaf is pressed onto sized or bole-covered work, but the steps that follow are what actually determine whether a piece ends up with a soft glow, a mirror shine, or an uneven, patchy surface. What happens next also depends heavily on which gilding method you started with.
Burnishing: exclusive to water gilding
Burnishing is the step that gives water-gilded work its signature mirror shine, and it only applies to water gilding's bole-and-gesso system — there's no equivalent step in oil or acrylic gilding, whose finish stays a softer, matte-leaning glow by design. Once leaf has been laid over bole and allowed to dry completely (rushing this step is a common and costly mistake), an agate burnisher is rubbed firmly over the gold in smooth, controlled strokes. The stone compresses the extraordinarily thin leaf against the glassy-smooth gesso ground beneath it, and that compression against a hard, flat surface is what produces the genuine mirror reflectivity burnished gold is known for. It's worth pausing on just how little material is being compressed here: leaf at standard thickness is on the order of a tenth of a micron, and the burnisher's job is to press that impossibly thin layer down evenly against the gesso without ever tearing or displacing it — which is exactly why a smooth, hard, rounded stone is used rather than anything with an edge or a rough surface.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in the process: burnish too soon, while the bole still holds moisture, and the leaf can smear, tear, or fail to take a shine at all; wait too long past full drying in some traditional water-gilding approaches (where the bole is meant to be burnished at a specific window of residual moisture) and the ground can become too hard to compress properly. Gilders often intentionally burnish only some areas of a piece — raised highlights, for instance — while leaving recessed or shadowed areas matte, using the contrast between polished and unpolished gold to make carved detail read more clearly from a distance.
Agate burnishers themselves come in a handful of traditional shapes suited to different parts of a piece — broader, rounder stones for open flat areas and narrower, pointed tips for working into tight mouldings and carved detail — and a chipped or scratched burnisher will transfer that flaw straight into the gold, so they're stored carefully and never left loose where they can knock against harder tools. Keeping the stone itself clean and free of grit is a small habit that protects both the burnisher and every piece it touches afterward.
Oil and acrylic gilding's finishing steps: pressing and cleaning up skewings
Oil- and acrylic-gilded work skips burnishing entirely, but it isn't finished the instant leaf goes on. A soft brush is used to gently press the leaf firmly onto the size across the whole surface, ensuring full contact and pushing out any trapped air, then to sweep away the small torn fragments and overlap trimmings left behind — these leftover scraps are called skewings, and experienced gilders routinely save and reuse them, since even small fragments of genuine gold leaf remain worth collecting rather than discarding. Any spot where the leaf didn't fully take — a small gap or thin patch — typically gets a second, smaller piece of leaf pressed in before the work is considered complete, a step usually called fixing or repairing. This is also where a size that missed its open window shows up: leaf pressed onto size that's gone past tacky and started to skin over simply won't grip, no matter how carefully it's pressed, which is why reading the size's actual tack rather than trusting the clock alone matters as much at this stage as it did when you first brushed the size on. Sealing: essential for some leaf, optional for others
Whether a finished piece needs a protective sealant or varnish depends almost entirely on what leaf was used. Genuine gold leaf, in any karat commonly used for gilding, does not tarnish, so sealing it is a matter of protecting against physical wear and handling rather than chemical change — some water-gilded work is deliberately left unsealed specifically to preserve the exact texture and shine burnishing produced, since some sealants can slightly dull a hard-won mirror finish. Composition leaf and silver leaf are a different story: both will tarnish over time through ordinary oxidation, composition leaf considerably faster than silver, so a clear protective varnish is close to mandatory on either if the finished color is meant to hold rather than dull and darken within months. Whatever sealant you reach for, if it's solvent-based, use it somewhere with genuine airflow — a window open and air actually moving through the room, not just cracked for show.
Distressing and antiquing, when the look calls for it
Not every finished project is meant to look brand new. Deliberately worn or antiqued gilding — a common choice for furniture restoration or decor meant to read as aged — is typically achieved by selectively rubbing through fresh leaf in areas that would naturally see the most wear over decades, sometimes followed by a toned glaze or wash to unify the effect. This is a controlled, deliberate technique applied on top of otherwise sound gilding, not a substitute for proper application underneath it; a piece that's poorly gilded and then distressed to hide the flaws rarely holds up to close inspection the way genuinely aged gilding does.
A related but distinct decision is choosing to leave a burnished piece's less-visible areas matte on purpose rather than by mistake — recesses, undersides of ornament, or areas that will sit close to a wall or another surface, where the extra time to burnish thoroughly wouldn't be seen anyway. That's a deliberate efficiency choice gilders make on real projects, not a shortcut to be embarrassed about, provided it's planned rather than simply left unfinished because the burnishing ran out of time.
Cleaning finished gilded work
Once a piece is complete and sealed appropriately, ongoing care is usually minimal: a soft, dry brush or a gentle wipe with a barely damp cloth handles most dust, and harsh cleaners or abrasive contact should be avoided regardless of whether the leaf underneath is genuine gold, silver, or composition, since even gold's tarnish-proof surface can still be scratched or worn by rough handling. Framed or displayed gilded work benefits from the same common-sense handling any valuable finish deserves — clean hands, gentle contact, and keeping direct moisture away from any piece whose sealant or seal integrity you're not certain of.
If a sealed piece does eventually show wear or local tarnish through a compromised patch of sealant, patching that one area rather than stripping and refinishing the whole piece is usually the more sensible first attempt — clean the affected spot back to sound material, reapply a small, carefully feathered patch of sealant or, if the leaf itself has failed, a small repair piece of matching leaf, and let it cure before judging whether the patch reads seamlessly under normal light. A full strip-and-regild is a legitimate last resort, but it's rarely the first thing worth trying on an otherwise sound piece.
Test the sealant before it's the only chance you get
Not every clear varnish behaves the same way over gold, silver, or composition leaf, and the difference only shows up once it's dry — some formulations that look perfectly clear wet dry down with a faint yellow or amber cast that shifts the leaf's color slightly, which matters enormously on a pale leaf like white gold or silver and barely registers on a deep 24k yellow. The only reliable way to know how a specific sealant will behave on a specific leaf is to lay a small sample patch, seal it exactly as planned, and let it cure fully before judging the result — doing this on a real piece for the first time, with no fallback if the color shifts unacceptably, is a risk that a five-minute test patch removes almost entirely. The same test patch is also the moment to confirm that a sealant doesn't visibly dull a hard-won burnished shine before committing an entire finished piece to it.
Working outward from a small area
On a piece of any real size, it's worth burnishing, cleaning up skewings, and sealing (if the material calls for it) one manageable section at a time rather than laying every sheet across the whole piece before starting the finishing sequence anywhere. This keeps each section's timing tight — bole doesn't sit around losing its ideal burnishing moisture while you finish laying leaf elsewhere, and size doesn't drift past its open window on a far corner while you're still pressing leaf onto the first one. It also means a mistake caught early, on the first section, doesn't repeat itself identically across an entire piece before you notice.
