The Knuckle Test: Reading a Size's Open Time Before You Lay Leaf
Every gilding size, whatever its chemistry, goes through the same three phases: wet, tacky, and fully cured. Leaf only adheres properly during the middle phase — tacky, sometimes called the size's “open” or “working” window — and that window has both a start and an end. Lay leaf too early, while the size is still wet, and it slides or sinks rather than gripping. Lay it too late, once the size has fully skinned over or cured, and it simply won't stick at all. Getting the timing right is arguably the single most important judgment call in either oil or acrylic gilding, and it's judged by feel as much as by the clock.
What “tack” actually means
A size reaches tack when its solvent or water carrier has evaporated enough that the remaining film is no longer wet to the touch, but is still soft and sticky enough to grab and hold a sheet of leaf pressed onto it. It's a narrower state than it sounds: too early and the surface still feels damp or slick; too late and it starts to feel dry and firm, even though it may still be tacky enough to work for a while yet before it fully skins over. The size doesn't announce this transition with any visible signal from across the room — you have to actually check it, close up, by touch.
The knuckle test
The traditional way to check is a light touch with a knuckle rather than a fingertip, and the distinction matters: a fingertip has natural oils and enough surface area to leave a visible mark or transfer some size onto itself, muddying the read and potentially marking the work. A knuckle, lightly and briefly touched to an inconspicuous test area of the sized surface, gives a cleaner signal. What you're feeling for is a slight tug or drag as you lift the knuckle away — a faint resistance, almost like the size is trying to hold on — without any size actually transferring onto your skin. If the knuckle comes away clean with no drag at all, the size likely hasn't reached tack yet. If it comes away with wet size visibly stuck to it, the size is still too wet to lay leaf. The window you're aiming for sits precisely between those two results: a pull, but no transfer.
Always test on an inconspicuous edge or a deliberately sized test patch alongside the real work, never on the visible surface itself — a knuckle touch, even done correctly, can leave a faint mark in size that's fully wet, and there's no reason to risk that on a spot that will show in the finished piece.
Why the clock alone isn't enough
Manufacturer tack times, and the reference figures gilders use for planning, are given for a standard set of conditions — commonly around 70°F and 50% relative humidity — and real workshops routinely sit well outside that range. A quick oil size that reaches tack in 3 hours at reference conditions speeds up to roughly 2 hours and 49 minutes in an 85°F, 60%-humidity studio, and slows to about 3 hours and 7 minutes at 55°F and 40% humidity. Acrylic quick size shows the same pattern at its own much faster pace: roughly 30 minutes to tack at reference conditions, drifting to about 31 minutes at 80°F and 65% humidity. None of these shifts are dramatic on their own, but they compound, and a size that's a genuine hour or two off the reference number on a given day is common enough that treating the clock as a countdown timer rather than a starting estimate is a real, avoidable mistake.
Slow oil size shows the widest swings because its base times are so much longer to begin with: roughly 12 hours to tack at reference conditions, dropping to about 11 hours and 31 minutes on a hot, humid day around 90°F and 70% humidity, and stretching to nearly 12 hours and 29 minutes on a cold, dry day around 40°F and 30% humidity — with the open window shifting by a similar proportion, from roughly 24 hours at reference conditions out to nearly 25 hours in that cold, dry scenario. On a multi-day exterior job planned around a slow size, that kind of shift is exactly the sort of thing worth checking the morning of, not assuming from a manufacturer's headline number written for a controlled indoor environment.
Planning a work session around the window
Once a size reaches tack, it doesn't slam shut instantly — it stays workable for its open window, which is where the real planning happens. A quick oil size's roughly 8-hour open window at reference conditions comfortably covers a single working session on a small or moderate piece. Acrylic quick size's roughly 2-hour window suits fast interior accent work but leaves little room for interruption once tack is reached. Slow oil size's roughly 24-hour open window is what makes it the right choice for a crew working across a full day or more on a large exterior surface, since the size stays receptive to leaf long after the crew's first section was sized that morning. Matching a size's open window to how long the actual laying work will realistically take — including realistic interruptions, not just the best-case pace — is as much a part of planning a job as estimating the leaf itself.
What a missed window actually looks like
Laying leaf before tack is reached usually shows up immediately: the leaf slides, wrinkles, or sinks slightly into the still-wet size instead of sitting flat and gripping, and it's often obvious enough in the moment to stop and wait rather than press on. A missed window on the late side is more insidious, because a size that's gone past its open window without fully hardening can still look deceptively similar to properly tacky size at a glance — the knuckle test is exactly how you catch this before committing an entire sheet to a spot that won't actually hold it. Leaf laid onto size that's skinned over typically fails to adhere at all, lifting away cleanly (if disappointingly) rather than tearing, which at least makes the problem obvious rather than leaving a weakly bonded patch that fails later. Either failure means re-sizing the affected area and waiting out a fresh tack window before trying again — a delay, but a fully recoverable one, provided you catch it before moving on to burnishing or sealing over a patch that never actually bonded. Catching a failed patch during the pressing-and-cleanup step, while the surrounding area is still fresh enough to blend a repair into, is far easier than discovering the same failure days later once everything nearby has already been finished and sealed around it.
Make the test patch actually representative
A knuckle test only tells you something useful if the patch you're testing matches the real work closely enough to behave the same way. Size brushed thickly in one spot and thinly in another won't reach tack at the same time, since a thinner film has less solvent or water to lose before it firms up — so a test patch sized noticeably heavier or lighter than the actual coat on the work can give a misleadingly early or late reading. The same goes for substrate: size laid over bare, absorbent wood behaves differently than the same size over a sealed or previously gilded surface, because an absorbent substrate can pull some of the size's liquid content away and speed up the apparent tack near the surface without the size actually being uniformly ready underneath. Testing on the same substrate, with the same coat thickness, in the same room, as close as possible to the real application, is what makes the knuckle test's answer trustworthy rather than just reassuring.
A ventilation note worth repeating here specifically
Checking tack by hand means leaning in close to the sized surface, repeatedly, over the course of the size's tack window — which is exactly the wrong moment to be working in a closed, poorly ventilated room if the size is solvent-based. Keep genuine airflow moving through the space for the entire time a solvent-based oil size is open, not just while it's first being brushed on, since fumes continue off-gassing throughout the tack and open-window period, not only in the first few minutes.
