Water Gilding vs Oil Gilding: Choosing the Right Size
Ask two gilders which adhesive to use and you may get two confident, opposite answers, because water gilding and oil gilding solve different problems and produce genuinely different finishes. Neither is a universal upgrade over the other — the right choice depends on the surface, the setting, and how the finished piece needs to hold up. There's also a third, more modern option that doesn't fit neatly into either camp, and it's worth understanding all three before committing a project to one.
Water gilding: built for the mirror shine
Water gilding is the traditional method behind museum-quality picture frames, gilded sculpture, and church interiors, and it earns that reputation through burnishing. The process builds up several layers before leaf ever touches the piece: a ground of gilder's gesso (whiting bound with hide glue) is applied in coats and sanded smooth, then a colored clay called bole is laid over it — red bole for a warm glow, sometimes a grey or black bole for cooler tones under certain leaf colors. Water, sometimes with a trace of alcohol, is brushed over a small area of bole immediately before a sheet of loose leaf is laid; the water reactivates the glue in the bole just enough to grip the leaf as it dries.
What makes water gilding distinctive is what happens next: once the surface is bone dry, an agate burnisher — a smooth, hard stone shaped for the job — is rubbed firmly over the gold. This compresses and polishes the leaf against the glassy-smooth gesso beneath it, producing a genuine mirror shine that no other gilding method achieves. That shine, and the ability to selectively burnish some areas while leaving others matte for contrast, is why water gilding remains the standard for fine frames and interior ornament where the finished object will be seen up close. Preparing the gesso ground also comes with a minor health note worth taking seriously: dry whiting and sanding dust from a cured gesso layer are fine particulates, and a dust mask during mixing and sanding is cheap insurance against breathing them in session after session.
The tradeoff is real: water gilding is slow, technically demanding, and vulnerable to moisture and handling until it's fully cured and sealed, which makes it a poor fit for anything exposed to weather.
Oil gilding: built for durability and speed
Oil gilding (sometimes called mordant gilding) skips the gesso-and-bole buildup entirely. Instead, an oil-based size is brushed directly onto a prepared surface and left to dry to a specific tack — not wet, not fully cured, just tacky enough to grip leaf. Once the size reaches that window, leaf is laid and gently pressed on with a soft brush, and once dry, the piece is essentially finished; there's no burnishing step, and the resulting sheen is a soft, warm glow rather than a mirror. Solvent-based oil sizes should be used in a ventilated space — an open window and moving air, not a sealed room — and that's worth planning for before you start, not partway through.
Oil size comes in two broad speeds. Quick size, often formulated to tack in roughly three hours at a typical 70°F/50% relative humidity, suits a single working session and is common for smaller interior pieces where you want to gild and be done the same day. Slow size can take twelve hours to tack under the same conditions but stays workable far longer once it does — its open window runs roughly twenty-four hours against quick size's eight — which is genuinely useful on large or highly detailed exterior work: lettering on a storefront, a weathervane, an outdoor sign, where a crew needs a long window to lay leaf carefully across a big surface, and where the size's slower cure also tends to correlate with better weather resistance once fully hardened.
That weather resistance is oil gilding's real advantage: it's the standard choice for exterior architectural gilding, domes, lettering, and anything that will face rain, temperature swings, and UV exposure, because the finish doesn't rely on a delicate gesso ground that moisture can undermine.
A third option: acrylic (synthetic) size
Alongside traditional oil size, many gilders now reach for a water-based acrylic size for quick interior work. It shares oil quick size's basic role — brush it on, wait for it to reach the right tack, lay leaf — but it tacks much faster, often in around half an hour at reference conditions, with an open window of roughly two hours. That speed makes it a natural fit for small interior accents, sample boards, and anything where you want to gild and move on within the same short sitting, and its water cleanup is considerably more convenient day to day than solvent-based oil size. What it doesn't offer is oil size's outdoor durability, so it stays a strictly interior tool in most gilders' kits rather than a universal replacement for oil size.
Both methods need a properly prepared surface
It's easy to focus entirely on the size and forget that neither method forgives a poorly prepared substrate underneath it. Raw, porous wood or an unsealed surface absorbs size unevenly, drying faster in some patches than others and leaving a gilded surface with visible blotches in sheen once the leaf goes on — a sealing coat (a thinned shellac or an appropriate primer, applied and allowed to cure fully first) is standard practice under either water or oil gilding for exactly this reason. Water gilding's gesso ground effectively builds its own smooth, non-absorbent surface as part of the process; oil and acrylic gilding still need that step handled separately before the size ever goes on.
It's also worth sizing a small test patch on anything unfamiliar — a scrap of the same substrate, or an inconspicuous corner — before committing size to the whole piece. Absorbency, tack time, and even the final color under the leaf can vary enough between materials that a quick test saves a much more frustrating mid-project surprise.
Combining methods on one piece
Nothing says a single object has to use only one method. It's a genuine, established practice — sometimes called parcel gilding when only part of a piece is gilded at all — to water-gild the areas meant to be burnished for contrast and oil- or acrylic-gild flatter or less prominent areas nearby, provided the piece as a whole doesn't need uniform weather resistance. A picture frame's raised ornament might be water-gilded and burnished for maximum shine while a flatter recessed field around it is oil-gilded for speed, since the visual contrast between burnished and matte gold reads clearly regardless of which method produced the matte areas. What doesn't mix well is water gilding and any exterior exposure requirement — if any part of a piece will face weather, the safer default is to gild the whole thing with an oil size rated for it, rather than mixing in a moisture-sensitive gesso ground somewhere the elements can reach it.
So which one does your project actually need?
The honest answer usually comes down to two questions: will this live indoors or outdoors, and does it need to be burnished? An exterior sign, a dome, or anything facing weather points toward oil gilding almost automatically — water gilding's gesso ground simply isn't built for that exposure, and acrylic size isn't rated for it either. An interior picture frame, a small sculpture, or ornamental detail meant to be seen up close, where the contrast between a burnished highlight and a matte recess genuinely matters, points toward water gilding despite the extra time it demands. A small interior accent piece finished in one sitting is often the best fit for acrylic size, purely for the convenience.
Scale and timeline matter too. A large exterior job with a crew working across several days suits a slow oil size that stays open long after it tacks — on a cool, dry day around 40°F and 30% humidity that same slow size can take upward of twelve and a half hours to tack, with an open window pushing twenty-five hours, so a crew planning a multi-day exterior job needs to budget for weather, not just the size's headline number. A small interior piece finished in an afternoon suits a quick oil or acrylic size, or the full water-gilding sequence if the mirror shine is the point.
Whichever size you land on, temperature and humidity shift its working time meaningfully — the same quick oil size that tacks in three hours at a reference 70°F/50% humidity speeds up to roughly two hours and forty-nine minutes in an 85°F, 60%-humidity studio, and slows to a little over three hours and seven minutes at 55°F and 40% humidity, and the gap widens further at the extremes.
