Bitcoin

Bitcoin is currently the largest blockchain network, followed by Ethereum, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin.

In 2017, Bitcoin’s value soared from $1000 to just under $20000 before dropping down to around $13000 at the end of the year. Since then, its value has risen and dropped sporadically from day to day, dragging smaller cryptocurrencies like Ether and Ripple along with it.

Bitcoin (BTC) is the first cryptocurrency to ever be created. It is also the coin with the largest market cap as of January 2018. Bitcoin is considered to be digital gold and a safe haven asset in times of economic uncertainty.

Ethereum (ETH) is currently the second-largest virtual currency by market cap after Bitcoin. Ethereum was launched in 2015 and had become the largest cryptocurrency community within 3 years, with 50% of Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) decided to be deployed on Ethereum’s Blockchain.

XRP (XRP) is often referred to as Ripple and belongs to Ripple Labs Inc., a US-based technology company. XRP is used mostly for payments and transfers between different currencies, crypto coins or fiat money such as USD or EUR.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a fork of Bitcoin that was created in August 2017 with some improvements over the original Bitcoin codebase. The aim of this fork was to speed up transactions, decrease fees and make other technical improvements that were not possible on the original Bitcoin blockchain.
