Book-of-Leaf Quantity Calculator

Enter the sheets you need and see the books and packs to actually order, plus how much extra leaf that rounding leaves you with.

Use the Leaf Sheet Coverage Calculator to get this number from a surface area.
Most leaf is packaged 25 sheets to a book.

Rounding up to whole units

The calculation rounds your sheet requirement up to the nearest whole book, then rounds that book count up to the nearest whole pack if you're ordering in bulk. The difference between what you asked for and what you'll actually receive is the overage — reported both as a sheet count and as a percentage of your original requirement, so a small project's larger relative overage doesn't get lost next to a big project's smaller one.

If you're starting from a surface area rather than a sheet count, run it through the Leaf Sheet Coverage Calculator first, then bring the sheet total here to see what to actually order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just buy the exact number of sheets I need?

Leaf is fragile and packaged flat between tissue to protect it, so almost every supplier sells it whole — by the book (a fixed sheet count, most commonly 25) and, for larger orders, by the pack (a fixed number of books, often 20). Splitting a book isn't something most suppliers offer.

What is "overage" and why does it matter?

Overage is the extra leaf you end up with because you can only buy whole books — for example, needing 13 sheets still means buying a full 25-sheet book, a 92% overage. Knowing the overage up front helps you decide whether to plan a second small project to use up the extra, or size the first project to use closer to a full book.

When should I order by the pack instead of loose books?

Once a project needs close to a full pack's worth of books (commonly 20), ordering the pack directly is usually cheaper per book than ordering that many loose books individually — worth checking with your supplier once your book count gets into the double digits.

Does packaging always work out to 25 sheets per book?

25 sheets per book is the most common convention for genuine gold leaf, but it isn't universal — some composition leaf and some specialty products use different counts. Always confirm your specific supplier's packaging and adjust the sheets-per-book field to match.

Educational tool only. Packaging conventions vary by supplier — confirm sheets-per-book and books-per-pack before you order.
